Not only the digital sound synthesis could replace all the techniques used during the 1950s, it also could develop new techniques: during the 1970s John Chowning found the Frequency Modulation synthesis, and later allowed Yamaha Corporation to produce thousands of synthesizers based on that technique. The development of computer music was parallel to the continuous building of new and faster computer processors, which allow a faster performance and a bigger complexity in manipulation of digital signals. Today many commercial computer programs are available for music, but still sound synthesis programs are the most complex and powerful tools to compose, produce sounds or modify recorded sounds. The major centers of media and digital art in the world first adopted sound synthesis languages in research and production of music. Also, in this way, electronic music composer is able to produce music with limited equipment and to record it on digital supports like compact disks, which can store a large amount of data. Furthermore, today with a reasonable budget it's possible to have also more than two channels, and already some surround systems are available on the market to realize and to hear music. Because of the enormous quantity of calculations in these days still is hardly possible to have all the sounds produced in real-time and, depending of the complexity of algorithms, one has to wait an amount of time required for synthesis. In the next future, when computers will be enough powerful, it will be possible also a real-time performance. The work of composers is radically changed in last decades: composers, as well as researchers, can experiment with new sounds, and can discover and create a new world of sounds, where the only limitation is creativity and fantasy. The tonal system in traditional music had its golden age for more than two hundreds years, and still it is the main system adopted in commercial music, but today we can say that there are no more limits towards the discovery of a totally new music which hopefully in future will find the same luck as tonal system.
